Welcome to Mama’s Homestead

Mama’s Homestead is a Hearth Letter for anyone who is done performing a life and ready to build one with their hands, their heart, and their whole self present.

Here you’ll find timeless homesteading skills, welcoming tables, and life lived with the seasons — one loaf, one jar, one gathering at a time. Weekly letters, hands-on workshops, and heartfelt hospitality to help you grow the roots you were never given. 🌻

I believe something has been lost.

Not just the skills, though yes, the bread baking, the herb and vegetable gardens, the preserving, the table set with intention. But also something deeper. The rhythm and the reverence.

I’m reviving it. All of it.

I grew up on an 1830’s homestead, gathering eggs before breakfast, learning to preserve by the canner, walking barefoot under a mulberry tree until my feet turned purple. I almost left it all behind. I’m so glad I didn’t.

Timeless skills for a modern homestead.

Today, I teach homesteading and simple skills - food preservation, herbalism, gardening, cooking, baking, crafting, sewing, and more - through hospitality, in-depth workshops, classes, and public speaking. I love inviting people into my world.

I live on a homestead modeled after that same 19th century way of life, with just enough modern touches to make it livable: a wood-burning fireplace with a cooking crane, a cast iron wood stove, a root cellar, a timber frame barn, an orchard, a greenhouse, grape arbor, and herb and vegetable gardens that would have looked familiar a hundred and fifty years ago.

This newsletter is where I bring all of that to you, wherever you are.

Rooted — Practical skills and seasonal rhythms of a life tended with care.

Gathered — Homestead hospitality, and the nourishing that happens around a table.

Passed Down — The legacy we leave through stories, recipes, traditions, skills, and the person we become as we pass them on, because the homestead is an expression of who you are, not the definition of it.

Warmly,

Nelle
Mama’s Homestead

Rooted. Gathered. Passed Down.

A Few Places to Start:

Meet the homestead — “The Grand Tour,” the story of the barn my husband hand-built, timber by timber, over four years. It’ll give you a real sense of the pace of things here.

My Favorite Workshop Right Now — “Host Your Own Salsa Circle” — because a lot of what we do here ends up on the table.

My Favorite Recipe — “Peach Crumble” was my favorite recipe from Peach Week this summer. Enjoy!

If you want more — The Hearth Circle is where the deeper, ongoing side of this lives: subscriber-only posts and the full archive, a community to talk it through together, and the Companion System behind every workshop — guides, printable recipe cards, checklists, and the bonus tips I’d normally only tell you standing in my kitchen. Read for free as long as you like, or join whenever you’re ready.
